In our parishes, charity also takes the very concrete form of dining halls, those “soup kitchens” that operate from once to five times a week, depending on the location. Each week, around 250 meals are prepared and distributed: some are picked up by the beneficiaries, while others are delivered directly to the most isolated people, who no longer have the strength to travel. These simple but nourishing meals not only help fight malnutrition, worsened by the economic crisis and chronic shortages, but also rebuild a sense of community. Around these tables, volunteers offer their time, their smiles, and their listening ear: often, it is the only visit and the only moment of companionship these elderly or sick people experience during the week. The dining halls are made possible thanks to donations and the commitment of parishioners. In a country where the State can no longer meet the basic needs of its population, these dining halls show the concrete face of a Church that, following Christ, chooses to serve the smallest and poorest.
